Abstract

The aim of this talk is to discuss the notion of analysis underlying the diagrammatic system of the Existential Graphs developed by Charles S. Peirce. For him, deduction was a process accomplished by means of diagrams, a kind of signs that fall into the semiotic category of icons and fulfill an analytic role. it will be shown that (i) Frederik Stjernfelt’s idea of an operational iconicity provides a semiotic basis for the notion of analysis, whereas (ii), following Bellucci and Pietarinen, unique decomposition is the essential feature of Peirce’s notion of analysis. These forms of analysis will be illustrated by the case of the “scroll” in the Alpha system of Existential Graphs and will be related to Peirce’s idea of a philosophy of notation. Between 1900 and 1909, Peirce chose the scroll as a basic sign in his Alpha system for Existential Graphs: Only one sign expresses the basic notion of illation.  On this basis, some analogies between this early version of the Alpha system and the philosophical Structural Reasoning will be explored.
